Breaking bricks and writing names. We'd like to thank Mike Mullin, author of Ashfall for visiting the Coralville Public Library and answering our questions and helping us learn how to survive a supervolcano! Thanks Mike!
Meet debut author Mike Mullin and talk about his newly released book Ashfall on Wednesday,
October 26 at 6pm.
For Alex, an Iowa teen, being left alone for the weekend means having the freedom to play
computer games and hang out with his friends without hassle from his mother. Then the
Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, plunging his hometown into a nightmare of darkness, ash,
and violence. Alex begins a harrowing trek to search for his family and finds help in Darla,
a travel partner he meets along the way. Together they must find the strength and skills to
survive and outlast an epic disaster.
Mike lives in Indianapolis, holds a black belt in Songahm Taekwondo, and is currently working on Ashen Winter, the sequel to Ashfall. For more information about Mike check out his website.
Based on the graphic novel by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World tells the story of Scott Pilgrim, a Canadian musician who realizes that he must defeat the “seven evil exes” of Ramona, a young woman he has come to believe is the girl of his dreams. This movie is approximately 112 minutes long, rated PG-13, and is being shown in conjunction with Teen Read Week.
Don't miss our "Make a Bookmark/Write a Letter Party" on Monday, October 24, from 3:30-5:30 in the teen area in conjunction with the WrestleMania Reading Challenge. The Reading Challenge is sponsored by YALSA and the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). Teens compete to earn prizes, including a trip to WrestleMania and money for their local library.
CPL staff will choose the best bookmark and letter from each age group. (5/6, 7/8, 9/12). A panel of national judges will choose 21 finalists, seven from each grade category and different regions of the country. The 21 finalists win a trip to WrestleMania in Miami.
Teen Read Week is an initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). Teen Read Week started in 1998. This year's theme is Picture It @ your library®, which encourages teens to read graphic novels and other illustrated materials, seek out creative books, or imagine the world through literature, just for the fun of it. Libraries across the world celebrate Teen Read Week with a variety of special events and programs aimed at encouraging teens to read for pleasure and to visit their libraries for free reading materials.
Why is it important to celebrate? For a lot of reasons! Teens have so many options for entertainment, so it's important to remind them to spend time reading for pleasure: it's free, fun, and can be done anywhere! Research shows that teens who read for fun have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workforce. Also, it’s a great chance to let your school or your public library communities know how important teen services are! Let teens know the possibilities that exist within your doors, and within the covers of books.
Check out the CPL Teens Facebook page for a Teen Read Week Contest. Like the library and answer questions for a chance to win!New Books for October are now up on the website at New Books
